On Saturday, February 5, 2011 Florida's Lt Governor Jennifer Carroll was in Madison, Florida to give the keynote address at the Madison Military Family and Community Covenant Signing Ceremony. A standing-room-only crowd in the courtroom of the Madison County Courthouse heard from local and state dignitaries as they spoke in support of our military and their families. Lt Governor Carroll emphasized the importance of communities like Madison as they care for active duty service personnel and veterans and their families. Immediately following the signing ceremony a flag that was flown over the US Capital Building in Washington, D.C. and a state flag that was flown in Tallahassee were raised on the flag pole in front of the Courthouse.
Had it not been for the men and women who served in the armed forced of this great country we would not be enjoying our freedoms. Time and again, ordinary people have served America in extraordinary ways so that all who live in this great nation can enjoy the pursuit of happiness our Founding Fathers envisioned. Veterans who served this country were your fathers, uncles, aunts, cousins, brothers grandparents, and sisters - ordinary citizens who did extraordinary things for all of us. For the civilian citizen, everyday should be an appreciation for our active military and veterans. Our citizens should never forget the magnitude of the deeds and sacrifices of the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and Guardsmen who have, as Abraham Lincoln said so well, given the last full measure or devotion. We should trace our very existence to President Abraham Lincoln’s devotion to veterans and his steadfast belief that their service must be justly recognized by a grateful nation.
